5 days ago the House passed a new surveillance Bill by a close vote (213-197). The problem is, the Bill is far and away from a decent one. The matter is, however, the Dems. know it. The Bill features many added and deducted amendments to the Senates Bill and is rifled with partisan politics. In reality, that's nothing new.
The key issue is, however, the Bill does not contain a measure granting retroactive immunity to the telecoms for their participation in the warrant less surveillance program. Well that doesn't sound too bad right? I mean we always want to go stick it to the big company don't we? Just looking out for the little man.....are we Mrs. Pelosi?
In fact this is not the case at all, and is an example of extremely crude politics. If retroactive immunity doesn't get passed let me explain what that means. After 9/11 the U.S. government with Bills such as the Patriot Act and so on, really beefed up security and surveillance of suspected terrorists. Now, at the time these measures were passed (with ease) they came under very little criticism. What the Government did is went to phone companies and asked for records for potential and suspected terrorists.
Now remember at this time everybody and their mama has a U.S. flag somewhere? Well, to the phone companies it looked like the patriotic thing to do, and a good stand with the government to combat terrorism. Stop- now fast forward to 2008.
The mood has changed, the country is hardly united, and the Dems. hate Bush. Today, these phone companies are being sued by over 40 civil lawsuits for simply doing what the government asked them to do. How is that right? Its 100% scandalous. The Democrats know it too, but they don't care. Why? Simple, it would be their dream come true to have these phone companies that co-operated with the government sued and in the process find something to try and demonize the Bush administration.
This isn't about big or small government to the Dems. Its about getting a shot in at Bush, and for all they care the phone companies can take a hit if it'll accomplish their partisan goals. That's disgusting politics, at it's worse.
